  • Thailand's human trafficking trade - BBC News

Jonathan Head has spent six months investigating the trafficking of humans in Thailand. The plight of thousands of migrants stranded on boats in the Andaman Sea has drawn global attention to a sinister trade in people, which has thrived in south east Asia. The decision by Thailand this month to finally move against people smugglers left hundreds of migrants drifting on boats out at sea. For years, though, Thailand has been accused of ignoring the trade centred inside its borders. Those affected are mostly Rohingya migrants from Myanmar, and increasingly, impoverished Bangladeshis, all seeking jobs in Malaysia. The main route has been through Thailand - where ruthless traffickers hold them until their families pay for their release. Subscribe http://www.youtube.com/bbcnews Check out our...

(BBC News, 13 Oct 2016) - Thailand's King Bhumibol Adulyadej, the world's longest-reigning monarch, has died after 70 years on the throne, the palace says. The king, 88, was widely revered in Thailand. He was seen as a stabilising figure in a country hit by cycles of political turmoil and multiple coups. He had been in poor health in recent years, making few public appearances. Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn will be the new monarch, the prime minister has said. In a televised address to the nation, Maha Vajiralongkorn said Thailand would hold a one-year mourning period and that all entertainment functions must be "toned down" for a month. "He is now in heaven and may be looking over Thai citizens from there," he said of King Bhumibol. The king's death comes as Thailand remains under military rule following a coup in 2014. The palace had warned on Sunday that the king's health was "not stable". Many Thais had been wearing pink to try to bring good luck to the ailing monarch. Hundreds of people had gathered outside the hospital where he was being treated. "His Majesty has passed away at Siriraj Hospital peacefully," the palace statement said, adding he had died at 15:52 (08:52 GMT). Parliament is to hold a special session at 21:00 local time (14:00 GMT). Crown Prince Vajiralongkorn, who is 63, is much less well known to Thais and has yet to attain his father's widespread popularity. He spends much of his time overseas, especially in Germany Strict lese-majeste laws mean public discussion of the succession are punishable by lengthy jail terms. Unifying monarch Given the pivotal role the king has played in maintaining the balance of power in Thailand's volatile political environment, the succession will be a formidable challenge for the government, says the BBC's Jonathan Head in Bangkok. King Bhumibol, who was born in Cambridge in the US state of Massachusetts, acceded to the throne on 9 June 1946 after his brother, King Ananda Mahidol, died. Though a constitutional monarch with limited powers, King Bhumibol was regarded by many Thais as semi-divine. They looked to him to intervene in times of high tension. He was seen as a unifying and calming influence through numerous coups and 20 constitutions. However, his critics argued he had endorsed military takeovers and at times had failed to speak out against human rights abuses. A British husband was robbed at gunpoint and mugged as his wife went to use the toilet in a bar on the first day of their holiday in Thailand.Mik Laverty, an Army veteran, was mugged at gunpoint by two men while on holiday in Phuket Island. The couple, from Newton Aycliffe in Durham, had travelled to Thailand to celebrate his 50th birthday.Mrs Laverty had gone into a bar to use the toilet while her husband waited for her outside. When she returned she couldn't see him among crowds of people in the street. She frantically searched the area before returning to their hotel.Staff checked CCTV footage but there was still no sign of Mr Laverty until the hotel was contacted by a nearby hospital to say one of their guests had been admitted.Mrs Laverty then rushed to the hospital where she found her badly beaten husband. When he told the attackers he had no money, they took his watch and keys before leaving him in a side street with multiple leg fractures which have since been operated on.She has reported the attack to police and the couple expect to speak to the British Embassy today.Mr and Mrs Laverty, who have two sons, have already had to pay about £3,000 for hospital treatment but are concerned about spiralling costs while their insurers investigate. An online fundraising campaign called 'Get Mik and Denise Home' was set up by a friend of Mrs Laverty's and has raised almost £1,000 in the first 24 hours.Mrs Laverty said support from home is helping them get through the ordeal.Writing on Facebook she said: 'This has been the worst experience in my life ever I am truly gutted and devastated as to what has happened and appreciate what everybody has done for me and Mik.'I just so can't wait to be back in the UK and get this horrific ordeal put behind us.' BREAKING NEWS : Thailand's new king leads mourners in father's funeral Thailand's new king today led a procession of his father's ashes through the streets of Bangkok after he picked bits of charred bones and remains to be enshrined as relics following a spectacular cremation last night attended by Prince Andrew. The procession was part of an elaborate, five-day cremation ceremony that drew hundreds of thousands of black-clad mourners to Bangkok's historic old quarter. King Bhumibol was the world's longest-reigning monarch when he died a year ago aged 88. His seven-decade rule spanned some of the most tumultuous moments in modern Thai history, including several coups, a deadly crackdown on student protesters, natural disasters and a regional financial crisis. His son, new King Maha Vajiralongkorn, presided over the burning of his father's remains in a golden crematorium at a late-night ceremony in the Thai capital on Thursday. Thousands of mourners stayed to watch as smoke rose from the crematorium with many sobbing and crying loudly. The crowds had diminished on Friday, but thousands of people still lined the streets to glimpse what they could of a ceremony that in total cost $90 million. 'I can't express my sadness at the loss. It's like a child longing for a parent,' said Boonpherm Buatho, 56, a housekeeper. Shielded from the sun by a large white-and-gold umbrella, King Vajiralongkorn led a religious ceremony to return his father's remains to the palace. He sprinkled the bones with sacred water as classical Thai music played. The remains were blessed by Thailand's Supreme Patriarch, the head of the order of Buddhist monks. The late king's bones will be taken to the Grand Palace, where he had lain in state since his death last October. Although Thailand does not conduct polls on the monarchy's popularity - partly because of strict laws that protect the royal family from insult - the king built up a wide personal following and is often referred to as 'father'. The ceremony on Thursday brought Thailand to a standstill as many businesses, including banks, shut to honour the late king. The late king's nine-spired crematorium, built to honour the ninth king of the Chakri Dynasty, features intricate carvings and staircases with sculptures of nagas - a half-human, half- cobra beings - among other mythical creatures. Pictures of mourners wearing black and holding photographs of the late king flooded social media in Thailand, with many using popular hashtags such as #rama9, #kingofkings, and #thegreatestking. On Saturday, a religious ceremony for the late king's remains will take place within the palace. On Sunday, the bones will be transferred to the palace hall where the relics of past kings are kept. A procession will then take his ashes from the palace to be divided between the temples of Wat Rajabopidh and Wat Bovoranives. The first of those temples contains the ashes of many royals. The second is where King Bhumibol was ordained as a monk - a tradition for many Thai men - and is the centre of the strict Thammayut sect founded by the late king's great grandfather. Raised in Switzerland, Bhumibol ascended the throne aged 18 in 1946 after his elder brother Ananda Mahidol was shot dead in mysterious circumstances at the Grand Palace in Bangkok. He was crowned four years later, inheriting a monarchy whose power was in steady decline. By time of his death, all of that had changed. Bhumibol left behind one of the world's richest monarchies, with the palace the pivot point of Thailand's power networks including the influential military. 'Thailand needed a king as rallying and unifying symbol and a young king found a people to rebuild a kingdom around,' explained Thitinan Pongsudhirak, a politics professor at Chulalongkorn University. A revival of antiquated palace rituals - including prostration in his presence - and spiritual duties gilded the throne, elevating Bhumibol to a semi-divine status. That deification made scenes of his engagement with ordinary Thais even more remarkable to a nation awed by his work ethic. Over years spent criss-crossing Thailand, Bhumibol seeded thousands of well-publicised royal projects in a poor, agrarian country that won him the moniker the 'Development King'.
